This page explains the layout of the church pages and how to get the most out of them.

1. Illustration of Church

Drawings of most of the churches in Scotland's Churches Scheme have been provided by John R Hume.


2. Church Information

Information about the denomination, linked churches, location, website address etc of the church.


3. Church Facilities

The facilities of each church are represented by symbols. Hover your mouse over each symbol for a description or use the key at the foot of this page.


4. Church Overview

Description of the church, its history, architecture and other points of interest.


5. Services

This section gives information on when the church has its services.


6. Opening Arrangements

Description of when the church is open
(apart from services).

If opening is by arrangement, contact the church using the information at the foot of the left-hand column. This will usually be by email. If email is not convenient (for instance you are travelling), then use the church website to make contact or use the postal address.


7. Linked Churches

This section shows churches in Scotland's Churches Scheme which are linked or united.


8. Image Gallery

Each church can upload up to six images. These are shown on the page as thumbnails. If you click on a thumbnail a larger version will appear.


9. Events Calendar

This shows any upcoming events associated with the church. You can browse through the calendar for future months. If you click on a highlighted date, this will give you information on the event taking place.


10. Location of Church

This section shows the location of the church using Google maps. You can use the controls within the map to zoom in and out and around the surrounding area. This map also plots other churches.


11. Nearby Churches

This section of the page lists up to five nearby churches as well as giving the distance to these churches.


12. Contact This Church

Where an email address for the church is known to Scotland's Churches Scheme there will be a panel for making contact. messages posted using the 'Contact this Church' panel will go direct to the church, not to Scotland's Churches Scheme. Where no email address is known for this church, its postal address or a telephone number will be displayed.

Listing Category

Category A Listing Category A Listing: Buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little-altered examples of some particular period, style or building type.

Category B Listing Category B Listing: Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of some particular period, style or building type which may have been altered.

Category C Listing Category C Listing: Buildings of local importance, lesser examples of any period, style, or building type, as originally constructed or moderately altered; and simple traditional buildings which group well with others in categories A and B.

The information about churches participating in Scotland’s Churches Scheme has been provided by the congregations or taken from the Historic Scotland list and published sources, in particular, the Buildings of Scotland volumes and the RIAS Illustrated Architectural Guides.  The information is not authoritative and Scotland’s Churches Scheme cannot accept any responsibility for its accuracy.
