Church Overview

The earliest recording is 1255/6 when the parson had to swear allegiance to Edward I of England. Medieval structure largely rebuilt 1626 and again in 1723-5, with alterations 1779-84. The north aisle and belfry was added in 1730-1. In 1878 the north gallery was removed and the east and west galleries partitioned. Important late-8th century cross slab moved indoors in 1978. Church closed for worship in 1990 and Nigg Old Trust was formed to care for the building and show the cross to visitors. On Pictish Trail. Visit enhanced by the opening of the beautiful and historic Bishop's Walk in 2008 immediately adjacent to the church.
