Church Overview

Originally a Free Church. Built by Pilkington and Bell 1871 to an orthodox four-square plan with restrained detail. The massive upward growth contrasts with the fragile shafted geometric window in the central gable. Octagonal belfry, truncated in 1976. Powerful interior, rebuilt after a fire in 1898, with very thin cast-iron columns supporting huge transverse beams over the side galleries. Organ reconstructed 1976 from two instruments by Blackett & Howden 1899 and Forster & Andrews 1904.
