Church Overview

The stimulus for the kirk, designed by Robert Stevenson in 1826 for the Free Kirk, came from the Rev Dr John Macdonald who visited St Kilda several times in the early 19th century. A small rendered church with schoolroom attached. Inside, a roomy pulpit c1920.

The church fell into disrepair after evacuation in 1930. Renovated over a period of 20 years since coming into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1957. St Kilda was Scotland's first World Heritage Site.
