Church Overview

The church, designed by P P Pugin, 1904-5, is a classic and little altered example of his work. White Carrara marble altar and reredos added 1932 and the side sltars 1939. Stained glass windows, 1948 by John Hardman & Co, depicts the Crucifixion and scenes of the local pits and iron works, as well as St Barbara (patron saint of miners), St Joseph, St Cecilia, St John Ogilvie and the Baptism of The Lord. Stations of the Cross are from Germany. The church has been adapted to changing liturgical practice while retaining its original character and quality.
