Church Overview

Sir Robert Rowand Anderson designed St John's which was opened in 1869 and was enlarged in 1873. Described by Thomas Bradshaw then as the 'most elegant place of worship in the County'. Early Geometric Gothic with a notable broach spire. The rich interior includes glass by Kempe, and a reredos with a mosaic of the Last Supper by the Italian Salviati. The chancel was refurbished in 1913, its roof bearing 106 carved bosses. These, together with the woodwork of the choirstalls 1902, organ screen and war memorial, are all by Lorimer. The tower contains a ring of eight bells, six hung in 1871 and a further two in 1925.
