Church Overview
An important Modernist building of 1965 in a spectacular setting. Designed by architect Richard J McCarron, roughly square in plan with a monopitch roof. Due to the remote location, it was was largely self-built by the parishioners; building took 15 months. The simple and massive exterior combined with the carefully lit interior make it an exemplar of its type and it remains largely unaltered.
The interior has whitewashed walls and a sloping timber roof. The painted oak main altar, 1860s from Pro-Cathedral in Oban, is lit by flanking tall narrow side lights. Stations of the Cross by Canon Calum MacNeill, a local priest, with inscribed imagery on local slate, sourced from the nearby Island of Sturley. Above the Blessed Sacrement side altar is a ceramic on the theme of the Sacred Heart by David Harding of Edinburgh who was also responsibile for original mural of Our Lady of Sorrows at the entrance. This was replaced in 1994 by the present mural reflecting the sorrows of the contemporary world by Michael Gilfeddar, commissioned by Canon Galbraith.
