Church Overview
One of Sir Robert Rowand Anderson's most distinctive churches, this is a fine, little altered Victorian church. Opened in 1878, it is designed in Anderson's signature Early Gothic style of nave with aisles and chancel in stone with a slate roof. Polychrome brick and tiled walls and tiled floor give colour to the interior. Stunning furnishings and works of art. Altar and reredos by C E Kempe, 1878, chancel screen by Robert Lorimer, 1922, brass eagle lectern; late gothic gilt altar-piece with sculpture of the nativity. Stained glass windows, depicting Christ, angels and saints, by James Ballantine & Son, Clayton & Bell, CE Kempe, Burlison & Grylls, J C Bewsey, Isabel Goudie and Margaret Chilton. Conacher organ, 1878, rebuilt by Binns, 1935, and again by David Loosely, 1981.
