Church Overview
The first church of Carriden was consecrated in 1243 by Bishop David de Bernam, although it is believed that the parish goes back to the time of St Ninian, c396 AD. The present church is the third. Designed by P MacGregor Chalmers 1909, in simple Romanesque style with a west tower and stone spire. The bell was cast in Rotterdam, Peter Oostens 1674. Inside, a wooden sailing ship 'The Ranger' hangs from the barrel-shaped pitch-pine roof. Six-bay nave. Baptistry chapel with a wall painting thought to be of the Scottish School. Sounding board on north wall 1655. A fine stone arcaded baptismal font, 2-manual pipe organ moved from the John Knox Church, Gorbals after the Blitz of 1941.
