Church Overview

Founded in the 11th century, the round tower of that date is of Irish inspiration. Slightly-tapering with its conical cap, it is evocative of the early Celtic church and is one of only two in Scotland. The doorway is six feet off the ground, providing security for the people or valuables within, the top of the tower is 86 feet high. The church itself contains 13th, 14th and 15th-century medieval architecture. Major restoration in 1900-2 supervised by J Honeyman (Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh). Special features include the 12th-century font and a collection of Pictish sculptures. Stunning 20th-century stained glass by Henry Holiday, Gordon Webster, Douglas Strachan, Herbert Hendrie, William Gauld, Hugh Easton and the firm of William Morris. The cathedral also contains the largest group of William Wilson windows in Scotland. Brechin Caledonian Railway nearby. Historical artefacts in Brechin Library. Brechin Town Trail. Pictavia. Angus Pictish Trail.
