Church Overview
Bonkyl (also spelled Bunkle or Bonkle) is a rectangular building with Romanesque Gothic features. It was built in 1820 with some later insertions. The Old Kirk, of which a semi-circular domed stone-slab apse survives (to south east of the church) was one of the earliest examples of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Scotland (late 11th century). In nearby Preston is another ruin, Preston Old Kirk, 12th century, its walls having survived because of their conversion to family burial vaults.
